I am a man in a suit who has fallen into the world of Minecraft.
Last time, I returned from a jungle expedition with cocoa, melons, bamboo, and saplings.
Those finds deserve more than a place in a chest.
This time, I turn the empty ground beside the inn into a garden for plants from the jungle!
Opening a Garden Beside the Inn
From the south end of the post town road, an open plot sits beside the gate, inn, and castle keep.
It looks like a fine home for plants that have traveled all the way from the jungle.
First, I build a wall of stone bricks and mossy stone along the road.
Travelers should be able to tell where the garden begins at a glance.
I set a dark oak double gate into the wall.
A hanging lantern above it makes the entrance feel like the start of a different little world.
Beyond the gate, a stone path leads through the garden.
Lanterns rise beside the steps, with a gazebo and water basin farther inside.
I place a small two-by-two water basin beside the path.
One quiet patch of water slows the whole walk down in the nicest way.
Along the wall, I plant the bamboo I brought home from the jungle.
The shoots are still short, but this corner is already beginning to feel different.
Growing a Giant Tree from Four Saplings
On the raised ground to the north, I start by planting a single sapling.
Even one little jungle tree promises a shape unlike the trees around the castle town.
Before long, the sapling becomes a sturdy tree.
Its spreading leaves already look very different from the familiar trees at home.
I work through the leaves to gather the saplings I need next.
Standing beneath the branches, this feels more like a forest job than garden work.
Once I have four saplings, I plant them in a two-by-two square.
These four small trees are about to become the heart of the garden.
It becomes a giant tree!
At 29 blocks tall, it spreads a deep green roof over the garden.
From the road, the giant tree stands beside the bamboo, with the inn and castle keep behind it.
It feels as if a little piece of the southern jungle has joined the castle town.
I add cocoa pods to the wide trunk.
Ripe pods and younger ones together bring warm jungle colors into the garden.
The gray parrot takes a seat beside its perch in the gazebo.
Under the roof, it can rest while looking toward the giant tree.
From the eastern grassland, the giant tree, inn, and castle keep fit into one view.
The things I found on the expedition have become a new landmark for the town.
Evening with a Parrot and Lanterns
Rain darkens the stone wall around the gate.
The entrance has a very different face from the one it shows in sunlight.
The parrot and I stand beneath the giant tree.
Even with rain all around us, the leaves make this feel like a calm place to pause.
In the southern bed, four of the eight stems now bear melons.
The garden is growing more than cocoa and bamboo at ground level.
Looking back toward the gate, I can see the lights of the post town road beyond it.
I never expected the inn to gain such a pleasant detour beside its door.
As the sunset colors the wall, the stone lanterns begin to glow.
With every step along the corridor, the daytime garden turns a little more toward night.
After sunset, lanterns guide the path past the water basin, melon bed, bamboo, and gazebo.
The distant lights of the post town road make the garden feel connected to the town.
The giant tree rises into the evening sky, with the inn roof peeking through its leaves.
It is as if one small deep forest has appeared inside the castle town.
At last, I close the gate and watch the lanterns glow.
It is exciting to think that the things I carried home from the jungle will now grow here in the castle town.
Next time, I would like to add more scenery that makes travelers want to follow the road beyond the inn.
