I am a man in a suit who has fallen into the world of Minecraft.
Last time, a music hall appeared north of the castle town, and the Allays moved into their new home.
This time, I make a road to a Nether fortress.
On a grassland plain, I take on the Wither.
Making a straight road to the Nether fortress
I take off my Elytra and put on a diamond chestplate.
With a bow, milk, a Fire Resistance potion, and golden apples, this is quite a serious outing.
I enter the portal that I opened in Episode 82.
From here, I make a route toward the Nether fortress.
The road runs at height 111 and takes 386 steps to the fortress.
I make it straight through the rock, away from the lava sea.
A Blaze stands directly ahead.
Only a few hearts remain, so this is not a place for carelessness.
I move through the dark corridors with a torch lighting my feet.
Minecraft’s official guidance says that summoning the Wither requires three Wither Skeleton Skulls.
Three skulls for the summoning are ready.
Now I can head for the grassland.
Taking on the Wither on a grassland plain
This time, I come to a grassland about 300 blocks away from the castle town.
It is still an untouched field, with flowers and a horse.
Minecraft’s official guidance introduces Soul Sand and Wither Skeleton Skulls for summoning the Wither.
I place the last skull in the middle and hold my breath.
The Wither appears in the sky with its three faces turned toward me.
Its health bar is full, and the battle begins here…
The spawning explosion tears a hole in the ground, and I stand at its bottom.
My health falls to four and a half hearts.
With the Wither above me, I eat some cooked beef.
For a moment, I need to recover.
At dusk, the Wither looks as if it is wearing shining armor, with its health bar around halfway down.
I raise my sword and move closer.
Even at nightfall, the battle is not over.
Its health bar is about halfway down in this photograph.
At last, I finish it with my sword.
A Nether Star remains on the torn-up ground!
Minecraft’s official guidance says that defeating the Wither gives a Nether Star, an ingredient for a Beacon.
After one night, I look across the field from the same direction.
The place where flowers and a horse stood now has broken steps and bare patches of grass.
A large crater remains where the altar stood.
The stone bottom is visible, together with exposed copper ore.
With the star I have picked up in hand, I look across the blast site.
Now I have something to bring back to the castle town.
Making a Beacon with this Nether Star
I make a Beacon with one Nether Star, five glass blocks, and three obsidian blocks.
Minecraft’s official guidance says that a Beacon works when it is placed on a block pyramid.
I make a Beacon with this Nether Star.
Then I set it on a base of nine emerald blocks.
As soon as I set it down, a beam rises into the rainy night.
The beam now shines in front of the music hall.
The next morning, I look over the Beacon and the music hall.
Just south of the hall from Episode 83, the beam reaches into the daytime sky as well.
The castle-town landmark is shining.
It has been a long day, but looking up at the beam brings a little relief.
