Greetings.
I am a man in a suit who has fallen into the world of Minecraft.

To make firework rockets for Elytra flight, combine one paper with one to three gunpowder.
Each craft makes three rockets.
Leave the firework star out of the rockets you prepare for flying.

The suited man seen from behind, gliding under a blue sky with Elytra spread and a rocket in his right hand

In Episode 81, I take to the sky with Elytra on my back and a firework rocket in hand.
Seeing those wings spread makes me want to head out again. There is always somewhere farther away, isn’t there?

This memo uses the recipes in Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.11 as its reference.
The screenshots come from Episode 81: earlier preparations and a journey through the sky.
Let us look at them in that context while sorting out the ingredients and flight-duration choices.

Gather paper and gunpowder to make three rockets

If you need paper, place three sugar cane in a horizontal row on a crafting table.
That makes three sheets of paper.
Minecraft’s official paper introduction also describes this recipe.

For rockets, place one paper and the gunpowder on the crafting table.
There is no fixed arrangement for these ingredients.
When adding more gunpowder, put it in separate grid slots rather than piling it into the same slot.

Paper Gunpowder Rockets produced Flight Duration shown
1 1 3 1
1 2 3 2
1 3 3 3

Every recipe here uses one paper.
Adding more gunpowder does not increase the output: it stays at three rockets.
What changes is the flight-duration setting.

This table describes the recipes in Java Edition 1.21.11, not the number crafted in the screenshot.

To build up a supply of paper’s raw material, see how to build an automatic sugar cane farm.
The gunpowder collection system has its own three-layer ocean creeper farm memo.
Here, I keep the focus on turning those supplies into rockets.

Leave stars out of flight rockets and check Flight Duration

An Episode 81 screen with a firework rocket held in the right hand and several more stacks of rockets in the inventory

In Episode 81, rockets are visible both in my right hand and in the inventory.
This is the screen after preparing them.
There is no ingredient arrangement or item tooltip on display, so the photograph does not tell us their Flight Duration value.

Now, I keep rockets for flying separate from fireworks made for colorful displays.
A firework star adds an explosion effect to a rocket.
For Elytra trips, prepare the paper-and-gunpowder version without a star.

Minecraft’s official fireworks introduction explains paper-and-gunpowder rockets and the explosion effects added by stars.
You can use up to three gunpowder.

Hover over a finished rocket and look at its Flight Duration tooltip.
One gunpowder corresponds to 1, two to 2, and three to 3.
The number corresponds to the gunpowder used; it does not mean one, two, or three seconds.
The official Java Edition data explanation also describes flight duration in terms of the gunpowder used in the rocket.

For example, to prepare Flight Duration 1, use one paper and one gunpowder.
For a longer flight-duration setting, choose the recipe with two or three gunpowder.
Still, do not read a guaranteed distance or speed into that number.
OjiCra has not compared all three recipes in flights under identical conditions.

Use rockets while gliding, and look after the wings too

Using a firework rocket while gliding with Elytra provides a boost.
The official Java Edition 1.21.6 update notes also describe using rockets as a boost while gliding.
Placing a firework on the ground and using one with your wings spread are different things to keep in mind.

Before leaving, check the rockets’ Flight Duration, that no firework stars were added, and the Elytra’s durability.
A bag full of rockets does not replace looking after the wings…
For preparing Mending and checking why an item is not repairing, see the Mending and equipment-repair memo.

Here are three common points of confusion before we finish.

Q. Do I need a firework star?

A. Leave it out of rockets prepared for flight.
Stars add explosion effects, so keep that recipe separate from the paper-and-gunpowder version.

Q. Does three gunpowder make more rockets?

A. It makes three rockets.
The one-gunpowder recipe also makes three; adding gunpowder changes the flight-duration setting.

Q. Is Flight Duration 3 the most efficient?

A. This memo does not compare distance or consumption under identical conditions.
Use the ingredient table and the tooltip to prepare the duration you want to use.

Combine paper and gunpowder, and leave the star out of flight rockets.
With those two points covered, check the items in your inventory before departure.
I look forward to the next trip with both wings and rockets ready.

That is all for this time.
Until next time.
