Greetings.
I am a man in a suit who has fallen into the world of Minecraft.
If a Copper Golem is holding an item but is not sorting it, check whether there is an empty chest or a chest that already contains the same kind of item.
In the OjiCra warehouse, adding one empty chest got a stalled delivery moving again.
This memo covers how to make a Copper Chest and a Copper Golem, how many items it can carry at once, the conditions for a destination chest, and what I checked when sorting stopped.
The mechanics are based on the official Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.9 information I checked on July 23, 2026. The test results are presented separately as observations from the OjiCra warehouse.
How to Make a Copper Golem and Copper Chest
In Java Edition 1.21.9, a Copper Chest is crafted by placing one chest in the center and surrounding it with eight Copper Ingots.
The Copper Chest is the container from which a Copper Golem collects items.
It looks different from a normal chest, so it also works as an easy-to-recognize intake box for the sorting area.
A Copper Golem is created by placing a Carved Pumpkin or Jack o’Lantern on top of a Copper Block.
The small Copper Golem walks between the open Copper Chest and ordinary chests. It is a charming little worker even when I am simply watching it move around.
Which Chests Can Receive Sorted Items?
The official Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.9 release notes describe the sorting conditions as follows:
- It takes up to 16 items at a time from a Copper Chest.
- Its destination is either an empty chest or a chest that already contains the same kind of item it is holding.
- It can deliver to normal chests and Trapped Chests.
- It checks up to 10 chests or Copper Chests in sequence.
- If no destination is found, it waits seven seconds before searching again.
- It searches within 32 blocks horizontally and eight blocks vertically.
These are Java Edition 1.21.9 mechanics. I cannot assume that Bedrock Edition uses exactly the same conditions.
The sorting speed may also vary with the layout. Starting with the Copper Chest and a few nearby destination chests makes the movement easier to follow.
Testing Three Kinds of Items
I tested the sorting several times.
The next image shows a run containing 11 Copper Ingots, two stacks of Torches with 64 and 32 items, and 16 Cobblestone.
My first measured test used 16 Iron Ingots, 16 Bread, and 16 Cobblestone. The photographed run and that first measured test were separate attempts.
After watching for a while, I saw the Copper Golem open chest lids and begin carrying the items.
The first delivery was the Iron Ingots.
All 16 Iron Ingots moved from the Copper Chest to a destination chest. Up to this point, everything was working smoothly.
Sorting Stopped Because the Bread Had No Destination
The next item was Bread, but the Copper Golem could not complete the delivery.
There was no nearby chest containing Bread and no empty chest available. The Copper Golem kept holding the Bread, and while it did so, it did not collect the Cobblestone that remained in the Copper Chest.
It did not appear to be ignoring Cobblestone. Instead, it seemed unable to move to the next item because it had not found a destination for the Bread it was already carrying.
In this warehouse, one item without a valid destination made the entire sorting process look stalled.
One Empty Chest Restarted the Delivery
I added one empty chest to the warehouse.
Within 90 seconds, the Copper Golem delivered the 16 Bread it had been holding to the new chest.
After that, it collected the next Copper Ingots from the Copper Chest and started moving again.
In this test, providing one empty chest helped when sorting would not continue. That does not mean every item will always be cleared in the same order.
It is useful to check what the Copper Golem is holding and whether there is an empty chest or a chest containing the same kind of item.
What I Learned From Using the Copper Golem
When sorting appears to have stopped, I check these points in order:
1. Are the items to be sorted inside the Copper Chest?
2. Is there a nearby empty chest or a chest containing the same kind of item?
3. Is the Copper Golem still holding one particular item?
A Copper Golem does not instantly clear everything placed in a Copper Chest. Even so, with suitable destinations and a little observation, it became an enjoyable partner for organizing the warehouse.
