I am a man in a suit who has fallen into the world of Minecraft.
After looking up at the giant trees in a jungle, I want one in my castle-town garden too.
Here, I compare a single jungle sapling with the giant tree I grew by planting four saplings in a two-by-two square.
First, the Large Trees I Saw in the Jungle
When I enter the jungle, thick trunks and leaves cover the sky above me.
After seeing that height, I cannot help wanting one near the town.
In Season 3 Episode 73, I hold jungle saplings beneath the canopy.
Looking at those small saplings in my hand makes me want to welcome one of those great trees into the castle town.
Minecraft’s official sapling introduction explains generally that saplings come from leaves and that their growth involves a place to plant, light, and space.
That is the general story in the official sapling overview; here, I follow the photos from my own garden experiment in the castle town.
A Single Tree and a Two-by-Two Giant Tree
First, I plant one sapling in the garden bed.
Even this small sprout makes me wonder how wide the jungle leaves will become.
It grows into a solid single tree with a broad crown.
That alone changes the garden, but its trunk is one block wide.
Before trying the next planting pattern, I work beneath the leaves.
After tidying the branches and leaves of the single tree, I line up four saplings in a square for the next try.
For this example, I place four jungle saplings in a square, two by two.
From above, the arrangement is this simple.

It grows into a giant tree with a thick two-by-two trunk, unlike the single tree!
In this castle town, this particular giant tree is about 29 blocks tall.
Letting the Giant Tree Become a Garden Landmark
From the road, the giant tree’s height is easy to see.
Its thick trunk and dark leaves become a landmark beside the inn and castle keep.
In Season 3 Episode 74, the Nanban botanical garden, I add this giant tree to the garden landscape.
Planting one single tree or arranging four saplings in a two-by-two square leaves a very different impression when I look up.
