Greetings.
I am a man in a suit who has fallen into the world of Minecraft.

You can obtain an Ocean Explorer Map by leveling up a cartographer villager and trading with them.
In our Java Edition 1.21.11 play session, the map appeared after the cartographer reached the journeyman level, and I bought it with emeralds and a compass.
The map displays a marker for an ocean monument.

  • Source in this session: a cartographer trade
  • Cartographer level in this session: journeyman
  • Map price shown in this session: 9 emeralds and 1 compass
  • Trades used while leveling this cartographer: 6 paper trades and 6 glass-pane trades
  • Destination shown by the map: an ocean monument

This Memo follows the process from preparing a cartographer to finding the outside of an ocean monument with the map.
The prices and trade counts below are results from this session, kept separate from Minecraft’s general explanations and the Java Edition data we checked.

Prepare a cartographer

To get a cartographer, prepare an unemployed villager and a cartography table.
Even when the workstation is visible, the villager needs a walkable route to reach it.

In this cartographer’s workshop, the route was blocked, so I open two blocks in the wall.
Once the villager can walk to the cartography table, they take the cartographer profession.

The workshop itself appears in OjiCra Season 3 Episode 53.

This time, I trade with this cartographer and level them up to journeyman.

Level the cartographer up to journeyman

At novice level, this cartographer offers 1 emerald for 24 sheets of paper.
After six trades in this session, the cartographer reaches apprentice level.

At apprentice level, this cartographer offers 1 emerald for 11 glass panes.
After another six trades in this session, the cartographer reaches journeyman level.

In the Java Edition 1.21.11 data we checked, an Ocean Explorer Map is among the possible journeyman trades for a plains cartographer.
The trades and prices that actually appear can vary with conditions, so check the offers shown in your own trade screen.

The six paper trades and six glass-pane trades are also results from leveling this particular cartographer.
They are not a promise that every world will require the same number of trades.

Buy the Ocean Explorer Map

After opening the journeyman trades, place the cursor over the result and read the map’s item name before buying it.

In this session, I can buy one Ocean Explorer Map for 9 emeralds and 1 compass.
The 9-emerald price is what this cartographer displays here, not a universal fixed price.

Before this, I buy a Savanna Village Map because I do not check the name first (laughs).
Rather than deciding by appearance alone, read the result slot and confirm that it says Ocean Explorer Map before completing the trade.

Minecraft’s official ocean monument article also introduces the general route of buying an Ocean Explorer Map from a cartographer and using it to search for an ocean monument.
I use that official article for the general method while keeping our leveling counts and price separate as results from our Java Edition 1.21.11 session.

Read the map and find an ocean monument

When you open an Ocean Explorer Map, you can see the shapes of the sea and land together with a marker for the ocean monument.

Minecraft’s official explorer map article explains that when a player is far outside the mapped area, the player marker appears at the edge of the map.
Travel in the direction that moves your marker inward; once you enter the mapped area, use the terrain and monument marker to close the remaining distance.

When I first open the map in the castle town, my marker is at the edge.
As Shiro carries me over the ocean, the marker moves into the map and the destination terrain becomes visible.

Our destination is about 470 blocks from the castle town.
As I approach the marker, a large prismarine structure appears underwater, and I find the outside of the ocean monument.

Buying the map does not make entering the monument safe.
Guardians surround the monument, and one attacks me with its laser during this visit.

This Memo covers obtaining the map and finding the monument’s exterior.
Preparation for entering the structure and exploring its interior will be a separate adventure.
