Much of my base remained unfinished after I had spent a year away from this world.
I wanted to improve it, and a beacon would make that work far more comfortable.
Getting a beacon meant defeating the Wither.
My previous fight against one had been so terrible that I had avoided another battle ever since.
This time, I planned to trap it beneath the End portal.
The plan failed.
The Wither escaped, I died repeatedly, and the End island was left in ruins.

However reluctant I felt, a Nether Star required a Wither fight.
I entered the Nether and started looking for Wither Skeletons.
### The long hunt for three skulls
I used a Looting III sword.
The skulls still refused to drop.
I searched for areas with more Wither Skeletons and defeated them one after another.
It took time, but at last I had three skulls.
Together with four pieces of soul sand, they were enough to summon the Wither.
### A supposedly easy trap turns into a disaster
I chose the End for the summoning.
The plan was to trap the Wither beneath the central portal.
The thought of defeating my old enemy safely made me rather cheerful, even if it was not exactly a fair fight.
I prepared the space, placed the soul sand, and attached the skulls.
The Wither appeared with an explosion.
Something was wrong.
It was not trapped at all.
It flew away into the open End sky—the worst possible result.
I had expected an easy trap and had not prepared proper combat equipment.
I returned to the Overworld, equipped myself, and came back.
There was no choice but to fight.
I used arrows while its health was above half, but its attacks were overwhelming.
Looking upward at the flying Wither also made me meet the eyes of Endermen, who promptly joined the attack.
I returned to the Overworld for potions and tried again.
Even on Normal difficulty, the fight was brutal.
Once its health reached half, I needed to fight at close range.
The Wither kept destroying the End stone beneath me, and I died.
I returned without equipment to recover my items and died almost immediately.
After equipping myself again, I finally recovered them.
The ground continued to disappear.
I came frighteningly close to falling into the void and losing everything.
I reached the Wither again, drank a potion, and attacked with everything I had.
Finally, it was over.
I did not want another Wither battle for a very long time.
This time, I safely obtained the Nether Star.
At last, I could make a beacon.
Most of the island had been destroyed.
One careless step could now send me into the void.
I also found a Wither Rose.
The rewards were welcome, but I was exhausted.
At least I had not fought it in the Overworld.
Next time, I would use the Nether Star to make my long-awaited beacon.
