Greetings.
I am a man in a suit who has fallen into the world of Minecraft.
While walking through a snowy mountain, you may find a patch that looks like ordinary snow but lets your body sink straight through.
That block is powder snow.
Movement becomes difficult inside it, and frost begins to spread around the edge of the screen after some time.
This article separates the powder snow mechanics described by official Minecraft information from OjiCra’s comparison at the same location with and without leather boots.
You can read the full snowy mountain expedition in OjiCra Season 3 Episode 45.
Powder Snow Is Hard to Identify by Appearance
As I flew toward the snowy mountain on Shiro the Happy Ghast, a snow-covered spruce forest came into view.

Snow blocks and powder snow were mixed together across the mountain.
Powder snow also has a white surface, so it was difficult to tell the difference simply by looking down at it.
Walking forward without knowing which block is which can make you sink from beneath your feet.
Official Minecraft Information About Powder Snow
The official Minecraft Powder Snow feature explains that most mobs, including players, fall through powder snow and begin freezing while caught inside it.
Frost spreads around the edge of the screen, and a player who cannot escape begins taking damage.
The official article also explains that leather armor protects against falling into powder snow and against damage while immersed.
Powder snow can also be collected with a bucket.
Those official mechanics are kept separate here from the observations in our comparison below.
Without Leather Boots, I Sank and Saw the Freezing Effect
First, I stepped into the powder snow without wearing leather boots.
My body sank, and white powder snow covered most of the view.

As I remained inside, ice crystals appeared around the edge of the screen and the hearts changed to the freezing color.

Because the surface looks so similar to ordinary snow, this is a difficult hazard to spot while walking.
With Leather Boots, I Did Not Sink at the Same Spot
Next, I put on leather boots and entered the same patch of powder snow.
This time, I stood on top without sinking into it.

During this comparison, the freezing display seen without the boots did not appear.
That is the result of this test at this location.
It does not mean that leather boots alone permanently prevent every possible freezing situation.
For walking across powder snow, carrying a pair of leather boots makes a snowy mountain much easier to explore.
Collect Powder Snow with an Empty Bucket
Using an empty bucket on the powder snow collected it as a Powder Snow Bucket.

The steps I used were:
- Put on leather boots and stand on the powder snow
- Hold an empty bucket
- Use the bucket on the powder snow you want to collect
- Confirm that a Powder Snow Bucket has entered the inventory
I kept the powder snow in the bucket and carried it back to the castle town.
Bring Leather Boots and a Bucket to the Snowy Mountains
Powder snow looks much like a snow block, but entering it without boots made me sink and begin freezing.
In our comparison, leather boots let me stand on the same spot without sinking.
An empty bucket also made it possible to collect the powder snow there.

For a snowy mountain trip, I now prepare both leather boots and an empty bucket.
Even when powder snow is hard to recognize by sight, those two items cover both walking across it and bringing it home.
